CC3 template files are used as a starting point for new maps. Template files behave exactly the same as regular CC3 drawing files, except that they have a different extension (.fct) that renders them less susceptible to accidental overwriting.
CC3 uses many scaleable properties, such as line styles and fill styles, that are dependent on the current drawing units.
You can store many startup conditions in a template, such as all your style properties (line, fill and text), screen tools options (scroll bars, tracking, Toolbars, etc.), and multiple windows. A template can contain symbols or a pre-drawn border. Basically, whatever you can store in a regular drawing, you can store in a template.
Templates are not intended to be applied to a drawing after the drawing has already been created. Templates should be used before the file is created.
To use a new template, choose New Drawing from the File menu. The new drawing uses the template as its starting point.
You can also right click on New and click Select Template to choose a template, followed by New from Current template.
Note: This command has persistence, so every time you start a new drawing , the last template selected will be used—even between sessions.
If you have a CC3 drawing on the screen you wish to save as a template, select SAVE AS from the FILE menu and select file type "CC3 FCT Template". Since this is the only way to save a template file (the regular SAVE command saves only FCW, not FCT files), the chances of inadvertently overwriting an existing template are slim.
Templates created for the New Drawing Wizard are called wizard templates, and they have additional criteria for creation. See Creating Wizard Templates for more information.
Templates are stored in the Templates folder and its subfolders. They are named for their size. Wizard templates are stored in the Wizards subfolders.
CC3 has a wide variety of differing sizes of map templates with different borders and scale bars. It also includes other templates for dungeons, cities and other maps. There are some special templates (which include all symbol definitiions) so that you can change your maps from one symbol set to another.
These are situated in the Templates\Dungeons folder. Their filenames start with DD2 or Geomorph. Those starting with DD2 are set up for any dingeons, those starting Geomorph are configured for drawing rapid dungeons using Geomorphs . These are a very quick way of creating dungeons. There is also a metric template.
