Link with File

Click Link with File image\LINKF.gif

Link with File allows you to link an area of a map to any file. The file should be a type that can be automatically opened by Windows. When you activate the link, the file is opened with the appropriate software.

If you own Excel and want to link a spreadsheet containing economic information on a particular map, you could select Link with File, then the spreadsheet file, then a box shape on the map. Click in the box to launch the spreadsheet.

To link your map with a file:

  1. The File dialog box appears - select any file.

  2. The prompt reads "Hotspot Window". Select a corner for the hotspot.

  3. The prompt reads "Opposite Corner". Select the opposite corner of the hotspot.

Link with File Tips

If nothing happens when you activate the link it means that you have either deleted the file or that the file type is not registered. To register a file type, start Explorer, double click on the file then select an application to launch the file with. Make sure that "Always use this program to open this file" is checked.

You can link to bitmaps that you are using as fill styles or scanned images. You can then edit them easily.

Multi document capable software will not launch another copy of an application and will instead just open up the document.

Don’t use this command to link to exe files - use the Hotspot to make permanent links to exe files (e.g. a shortcut to Notepad® in a drawing)
